Cultivate – Day 1

And so it begins! The research/creation project as granted by Canada Council for the Arts is now underway.

I had an initial lunch meeting with my creative advisor, Corey Hardeman, to discuss the scope and goal of the project; and some general brainstorming. The main focus was as mentioned before:

To explore spoken language, interpersonal communication and its emotional impact using drawing, painting and a/v installation.

To clarify, the intent of this project is to portray the world as I experience it as a person with a hearing impairment, focusing on visual cues as means of communication, and the emotional impact of my deafness, which includes feelings of frustration and isolation. I will explore spoken language by illustrating my memories of learning to speak in order to fit in with the hearing world. I will explore incorporating images of audiology test results and soundwaves into my paintings. I will also create an audiovisual piece or two.

The physical objective is a body of work consisting of 10-12 paintings and at least 2 audiovisual installations, which will be ready to put forth for exhibition proposals. With that in mind, we’ve created a materials and supplies list to be purchased in the next couple of days so I have all the tools I need to proceed.

This project will be documented here as an online blog, which will be part of my final report for Canada Council for the Arts.

We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, which last year invested $153 million to bring the arts to Canadians throughout the country.

Nous remercions le Conseil des arts du Canada de son soutien. L’an dernier, le Conseil  a investi 153 millions de dollars pour mettre de l’art dans la vie des Canadiennes et des Canadiens de tout le pays.
